About Nora
Nora looks like the first evening of a holiday: sun in the hair, a light step, a smile that starts before you reach her. Athletic and 166 cm, she has hazel eyes flecked with green and honey blonde hair worn long. She designs a little of what she wears and alters most of the rest, so her clothes fit perfectly and belong to no particular label: a column of pale silk, a cropped jacket with a nipped waist, flat gold sandals for the dockside.
Spirited, adventurous and warm, Nora is good company for someone who has just stepped off a plane with too much in their head. Her English is fluent and bright. Fashion design is her craft and her distraction; she sketches in a small notebook and will quietly redesign your jacket while you order. She loves champagne, especially the small grower bottles, and spends early Sunday mornings among flower stalls, coming home with more than any kitchen needs.
Her speciality is the arrival evening at London City Airport. The terminal is small and fast, so within half an hour of landing you can be at the Crowne Plaza London Docklands on Royal Victoria Dock, where she has already asked the bar to chill a bottle. The dock is wide and calm, cable car cabins drift across the dark, and the day you have just had begins to feel a long way off. She lets you talk first, then makes you laugh.
Nora is based in Paddington, one Elizabeth line ride from the Royal Docks, and prefers a day's notice. Nora after six
Nora's ideal evening begins with a two-word message from the desk: flight landed. She is already at the bar on Royal Victoria Dock, in pale silk, with two glasses and a small grower champagne she discovered last month in a shop she refuses to name. You arrive tired and slightly crumpled. Within twenty minutes you are neither.
She asks about the trip, then about everything that is not the trip. The windows fill with lights from ExCeL and the last cable car cabins crossing the river. Around ten she sketches something on a napkin, a jacket or a dress, and hands it over with a completely straight face. Keep it. It is better than it looks, and one day you may recognise it on a rail somewhere.
Three questions for Nora
Because one family made it, start to finish, from their own vines. You can almost taste the arguments they had about it over dinner.
Whatever the person opposite is wearing, improved. I have redesigned a great many very expensive suits on hotel napkins, and nobody has complained yet.
Flowers in the morning, champagne at night. On a very good Sunday, both before lunch, and nobody else needs to know about it.
