Danielle, the late screening in E15

Stillness is the first thing you notice about Danielle, and then you notice that the room has gone a little quieter around her. Curvy and 170 cm tall, she has black hair that falls long and sleek, and brown eyes that stay on yours a moment longer than most. After dark she dresses in deep colours, charcoal, oxblood, a bottle green velvet once winter comes, with one strong piece of jewellery and nothing competing with it. The effect is calm, grown-up and faintly cinematic.

Sophisticated is the word guests reach for, though magnetic is closer. Danielle speaks fluent, measured English and never raises her voice to be heard. She reads poetry on trains and quotes it only when asked. Classic cinema is her real devotion: she will cross London for a restored print and stay seated through every credit. Museums fill her quieter days, preferably the rooms nobody else is queueing for.

Her Stratford evening turns on the late show at Stratford Picturehouse on Gerry Raffles Square, where the programme mixes new releases with the occasional classic worth the journey. She prefers the back third of the auditorium and a single glass of red carried in with her. Afterwards the square is calm and the talking begins, usually over a late supper close by, and usually about the ending you did not quite follow.
